This beautiful piece is my copyrighted hand-cast stone version of a one-of-a-kind red terra cotta sculpture I salvaged from a circa 1900 building around 1978- 1979. The building was located at 60th St and Columbus Ave in New York City where Fordham University is. Some casts of the original flat lion block;
Using the flat lion as a visual guide I modelled a square clay block giving two sides of the block a half face to create an attractive pair of bookends. I made a plaster piece mold of it and cast a number of slip-cast red terra cotta sculptures which were fired in a kiln and then given an aged wash. A rubber mold of one of these served to produce the interior cast-stone version. The slip-cast/fired few I made required considerable finishing work and use of a then local kiln, I have plans of re-issuing the fired terra cotta version at some point. It was one of my first and last clay models for quite a while as I soon lost use of the kiln and then having to move in 1982 put a hold on much of everything. Available as bookends or individually as a table sculpture, while the same lion design is additionally available as a wall plaque: My copyright registration on this work is: VA-1-340-700
