History of the sculpture

The original panel is one of a few extant on a landmark historic 1886 building known as Webster Hall. Located at 125 East 11th St by 4th Ave NYC

Webster Hall was designed by renowned architect Charles Rentz and quickly became the countryıs first modern nightclub. It was a place where one could witness figures such as Emma Goldman herald the cause of free love and birth control on one night and, on the next night, see the refined atmosphere and grace of a society function celebrating New Yorkıs elite. Margaret Sanger led strikers to the building in 1912. Other patrons from the club's early years include painters Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Stella.

During Prohibition, the theme of the balls held within the hall moved from the social and political trends to the hedonistic attitude of the speakeasy. Local politicians and police were said to turn a blind eye to the merrymakers who attended, despite, or perhaps because of, whispers that the venue was owned by the infamous mobster Al Capone. Appropriately, prohibition's repeal was the cause for one of Webster Hall's biggest celebrations, "The Return of John Barleycorn."

Using photos of the mirrored originals, used them as a visual reference to create my version of the design in a new reduced size model. The original panels are 32" wide, I decided to make my model 24" wide.

Below: photos of the building, and the original panel taken at my request by a very nice local photographer, this fellow not only does excellent photography, it seems I may have sparked his interest in photographing these ornaments he hadn't really noticed before. Thanks to GammaBlog, without his photos this model would not have been created.

New designs

The clay models that can be seen by the work in progress photos on a growing number of my store pages such as 120-R "Elizabeth" Webster Hall Griffin, Nr 202-R girl keystone, Griffin panel Nr SH-R etc are obviously NOT simply molded off existing antique pieces, these hand sculpted models are created from scratch by Randall in water clay, and typically take an average of 30 hours to set up, layout and model each.

When the clay models are molded here with high quality silicone, interior cast-stone as well as concrete casts are available for clients to purchase. The mold making process usually destroys the unfired clay model.

Instead of moulding existing antiques which are limited to what happens to be for sale at a given time at antique and salvage firms, costly to purchase, typically fairly large in scale (meant to be seen from the street 5 floors below) and are more difficult to display in today's smaller homes and apartments; The Lost New York City Collection has been rapidly expanding into creating brand new original models based on authentic 19th century and early 20th century Victorian and Art Deco architectural sculptures. While I do have a small number of direct molded pieces, these are being phased out over time in favor of creating my own original models. There are some 15 designs created by Randall in the last year all in the authentic looking Victorian and Art Deco styles used on these unique 19th and early 20th century buildings.

Questions-Comments

On these larger panels I am revamping the shipping on these because cardboard boxes shipped to me flat in bundles big enough for safe shipping will run almost as much as the materials to build plywood CRATES, so I am changing the shipping on these larger pieces.

The panel prices are on the individual pages, the shipping includes $10 for the materials and my time to build the crate from 1/2 sheet of 1/2" thick plywood, and $30 to ship anywhere in the lower 48 states. That includes the surcharge the carriers all charge for pickup $3, residential deliver $2, and shipments not in a cardboard container carries a $6 surcharge for handling.

The total shipping cost then is flat rated to $ 40 to keep things simple.

Here is a concrete cast made for a client to fill the hole in her brick wall left from removing an old air conditioner, the panel was nearly the perfect size.

Panels are packed into 1/2" thick plywood crates lined with rigid foam board, packing and shreaded newspaper or excelsior, glued, joint cleated and air nailed. You will need a #2 square drive bit or large phillips driver to open the lid.

The concrete version in the wood crate ships at around 98#, shipping on the concrete is a little higher.

Use this button to order, Panel $139.00 shipping of $40 for interior casts included- $179.00 TOTAL
