New model in progress

Beginning the reduced scale (18×27) clay model of a 19th century 25″x42″ spandrel panel located at the Brooklyn Museum’s salvaged ornaments sculpture garden.

Many thanks go to the staff member of the museum who provided an excellent photo along with specific measurements of their original for me to model from.

Updated photos;

I think I have this pretty well “done” except for refinment of details, cleanup and so on as the clay firms up and dries more.

I put the putti’s other eye in but wasn’t really happy with the top of his head,it was like his forehead projected out too far, so I shaved it back and redid the hair and I think it’s a lot better.
The head is drying pretty rapidly now since it sticks out a fair amount, so very shortly I’m going to have to consider the head done done because it will be very firm in a couple of days at most.
Probably the majority of the work will be done on the scales and there’s a LOT of ‘em!
The top is not warped, it’s from the close camera causing a pincushioning effect, a bit annoying as it always looks like my pieces are warped upwards and they aren’t!

Little girl keystone Nr 202

Here is another model in the works being created from photos of an original keystone that was on a tenement at 202 Eldridge St. 202 was demolished around 1977 and had four keystones.

The clay model below is shown in progress at the basic layout stage to set important reference points, move or adjust them as needed, and then finally begin shaping and detailing.

I make use of various templates and wood forms with which to obtain the shape as well as the cornice molding on the top which on the original extended along part of the sides.

The keystone is not only wedge shaped, the bottom has a radius that matched the arch top window, the shape of the front was curved as well as having a concavity the face was modelled in, all of these aspects are faithfully and accurately reproduced in my model of this.
As can be seen, only one half of the face has any serious modelling and form, the eye and nose will be reduced and further refined and once those are satisfactory the right eye can be modelled in it’s proper location;

Another progress photo, from tonight 12/3/06, when compared to the older version above one can see the development easier;
