Chicago panel

Progress update, the major modelling is done on this. It will be drying rapidly over the next several days and as it does I’ll be cleaning up the fine detailing, edges and so on.
I have this on my movable modelling stand after hollowing it out, so I could work on it flat and rotate it as needed, so the camera angle is pretty steep.
I will be putting it back on the stationary easel shortly and photos then will be more in line.

Shipping

Shipping out a set of four charter seals of the City of New York to a Brooklyn client to use as wall decor in a public hallway.
Should add a nice authentic and unique atmosphere to the hallway!

Since the client purchased four I decided to crate them in two crates rather than cardboard boxes. Here is how profesionally built crates are made here using 1/2″ CDX plywood, never chipboard!
Full cleats in all corners for glue and staples, and the lid’s screws to fasten into securely.

Yes, it adds to the weight, but I have found in larger items the cost for plywood is around what large box sizes cost. With some larger sizes I would need the flat bundles would have to ship to me via freight. Typically the costs to UPS large boxes wrapped in a flat bundle from Chicago to me is equal to or exceeds the cost of the actual boxes themselves.
When a box costs $5 and it costs a prorated $5 to UPS to me, and I can buy a full sheet of plywood for $18- enough to build two large crates, it’s clear the crates are better.
Crates also use far less packing material and are far safer for the sculptures than a flimsy cardboard box.

The client will need to have a phillips or square drive bit chucked into an electric drill, or a hand driver to open the lids.
Thus far no client has reported any difficulty there and most people do have at least a few basic phillps and slotted screw drivers in the drawer.

Concrete casts

Here are a couple of exterior concrete casts going to a long time client near Cupertino- sunny California :)

They have a new stain I am trying out, note how they blend in pretty nicely with the natural stones around them.
Once the water sealer weathers a little, the slight shine from the surface residue will flatten.

137-R grotesque, and the A3 Queen are shown.

Chicago model progress

Having already started this model for a Chicago client, and receiving my initial retainer deposit, I have uploaded some short, and to some perhaps boring and very talkative… video clips to youtube ;)

Now on my new acct on youtube, part 1;

These are designed for a broad audience of colleagues, artists, clients and others, as such they narrate and comment on all of the steps and processes.

Now that the form is made and the clay packed in, and the design’s landmarks sketched on the clay, I will just be adding highlight clips as it progresses to completion rather than filming the whole process.
